This second book in the Lancaster County Heritage series, follows Katie, who now goes by Katherine Mayfield, as she abandons her Amish community, and moves in with Mennonite relatives nearby. She learns to use the telephone for the first time as she starts searching for her real mother.
Once she has some starting clues she heads to New York state, to meet her mother. Upon her arrival at the mansion on Christmas Eve, she finds herself mistaken for an applicant for a maid's job. Bewildered she accepts the challenge.
Before long it becomes clear that an actress has been hired by her mother's coniving husband, to play the part of the long lost daughter, raised in an Amish community. When Katherine confronts him about it, she is thrown out!
But the Lord, (via the author) finds a way to bring her together with her mother after all before it is too late.
Another exciting reading experience! I enjoyed the way the household staff in the mansion came alive too, with their various personalities.
But of course, at the end, when Katherine moves into the mansion she has inherited from her mother, one is eager to see what becomes of Katherine next. Quite naturally, you start looking about for the third book in this series.
Fortunately for me, I had The Reckoning handy.
