Solution for Your Tsunami

© Ruth Marlene Friesen

A couple of days after Christmas we had a power outage in a large area of the Saskatchewan Valley where we live. Quite a few towns were affected when a power line split. We didn't know that until I read it in our weekly paper later. All we knew was I couldn't wash dishes, I couldn't turn on the computer or TV, and it was difficult to read by candle or kerosene lamp.

Our part of Canada has deep, DEEP cold temperatures, so it is important for our furnaces to have electricity to run. Ours is a water boiler furnace on natural gas, but it still needs electricity to run. From 6:40 pm the cold seeped into our fairly tight, winterized home.

As I dressed warmer and huddled under afghans on the couch I kept reminding myself that the people in Asia were much worse off than we. We had nothing to whine about. - So I didn't. I caught up on my sleep.

The night before I heard a phone interview on Focus on the Family, with a pastor in Sri Lanka, who with his wife runs an orphanage for 28 children. He described how when that Tsunami came on December 26th, he got them all onto their boat in record time, and how they rode into the huge waves, and by crying out in Jesus' name, the fierce and angry waves subsided! Wonderful!

So this morning I got to thinking. We all go through some traumatic events in our lives. Not all may be as melodramatic as a Tsunami wave that washes thousands away to their deaths, but when we're going through them, our trouble is up close and personal, it's right in our face.

Our troubles may range from being caught in a snow-storm, no heat in -30C weather, discovering a cancer is eating our insides, or the sudden death of dear friends and relatives make the bottom drop out of us. Maybe it is a more hidden thing we dare not discuss with others - like being overweight, or depression.

While a tsunami is a full 100 on a scale of 1-10 of severity in troubles, I know a solution that fits all of them perfectly. It's all in having a close, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and being free to cry out to Him at any instant, and as often as we need.

That's what that pastor did in Sri Lanka, and it saved many lives! That's what I have done when the power goes out, when caught at night in a snow drift some miles from town, with no apparent hope of rescue. I have practically talked Jesus' ear off when lonely and desperate for friendship and help. I've seen Him provide funds when there were none in sight, and just in time too!

I can recall many others telling or writing of how He has been the answer to their problems as well, no matter how unique their situation. So I feel I can boldly declare that Christ is the solution to any and all Tsunamis you may experience in your life.

If it's big enough to bother you, it's of concern to Jesus. Talk it over with Him.

There are going to be more problems in this life on earth. We can prepare for them by reading and re-reading the four gospels to get to know Jesus very well. Those first four books in the New Testament describe His life. What He said to His followers there applies to us too. Treat those passages as if Jesus is saying them to you, and start answering Him.

There you go! Now you have a relationship with Jesus, and a Companion and Guide for whatever hits you.

Our power came on again at 3:20 am. No real harm done, and I felt wonderfully rested the next day.
