My Mom used to sketch house layouts on the backs of past month calendar pages. She knew what she wanted when that time would come! I think I have memories of seeing that back as early as 1960. My parents built several houses out of second-hand materials from older houses that others no longer wanted. But Mom always dreamed of the day she would have a NEW house made of new materials.
Later, I used that memory in my novel, Ruthe's Secret Roses, and fulfilled Mom's dream house by having my main character, Ruthe Veer, build her mom's dream home while they were away on a trip.
Naturally, that didn't help my real mom, of course, as she never got to see it. Unaware, for many years she kept on plotting and sketching how she wanted her dream house to be laid out, how large each room, and so forth.
While I was still away in London, Ontario, when Dad and she reached retirement age and began to get Canada Pension, they decided to buy lots on the right side of the tracts in Hague, and work towards her dream house. They lived in the very cold house on that property the first winter. In spring they moved into a shed, and tore down the old house, and stage by stage, put in a new basement and built a pre-fab house over it, doing most of the work themselves. That was 1977.
They described to me later when I moved back home, how Dad was still working in a tire shop to keep some income coming in, so during the day Mom did what she could in the way of sanding, painting, etc., and in the evenings Dad would mix cement and she would help pour it by wheelbarrow full and with a spade and rake. He rounded up some men downtown when ready to put up the framed walls.
Slowly, despite Mom's ever poor health, they built up Mom's dream home. She finally got what she had been waiting for - for over 17 years. It had a full basement, three bedrooms on the main floor, a large, airy living room with big picture windows to the south and east, and a big kitchen with another big window. Later they added an attached garage and a sunroom.
I was blessed to live in it for over 23 years as I came home to care for them from 1983 to 2007! It was their safe, warm haven in their retirement years, and because I was there, they were able to live there right to the end of her life, (and Dad's) in Mom's dream house.
You may think there is no point in having a dream house in mind if you can't see how it could come to pass. What if two or three years go by and nothing happens? Is it not meant to be then? Would you hold on for ten to twelve years? What about fifteen to seventeen years - isn't that plenty enough time for a dream house to come to pass?
Never mind how long it takes – work on your dream house plans. One day they will come to pass! If you have no plans made, you'll miss the miracle when it knocks. Notice that you may have to do most of the work yourself, but God will give you the strength you need day by day. The important thing is to do all you can to prepare yourself for when the other necessary things come into your life. Be ready to jump into action!
