Last Week's Tax Miracle

I've been mulling over topics for today's issue, and have decided to tell you about my Income Tax miracle last week. (Politics is a touchy subject for some.)

I've done my own income tax filing for many decades. I may have dyscalculia (though never diagnosed as such. I just know that I have to go very carefully and slow if I am dealing with numbers for I tend to reverse them.)

In 1983, when I move back to Saskatchewan from London, Ontario, I learned that I could get a rebate for moving expenses, but I wasn't sure I knew how to claim that so I went to an income tax preparing service, and realized later that I could have done that. So I've done my own ever since. Until last week.

I've been summarizing my numbers for all of 2024 on Friday nights (my bookkeeping evening) since January, and then started to fill out the forms, only to discover that the government had made several big changes. Though I went through each step VERY SLOWLY and looked up everything I didn't clearly understand. It got complicated enough so that last Friday I threw up my hands and asked the LORD, for help.

Somehow I had misunderstood something and I was filing out a report on split incomes, but I only had zeros for most blanks. Then I asked myself, "What am I doing with split incomes? I've never been married and have no partner! Where did I take a wrong turn?"

By that time I was so weary of all that math, and had spent all day on Friday at this. It was nearly 5 pm, but went online and did a search for 'income tax help for seniors.' The first one at the top sounded good and would be open 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday. I resolved I would be at their door before 11 to be at the head of any line-up.

I got there at 10 to 11 am but three people were already standing at the locked door. I stood in line behind them and sighed.

As I presented myself to the receptionist, I explained my problem, she said, "Oh we don't have time to deal with that today." But she referred me to a friend of hers, Cara, and gave me her address on a pink slip of paper.

I found Cara at a small Accounting office across the street from the Mayfair library. She had me come into a customer interview room, listened to me, looked over my pages. After a few questions she decided to help me. There was a small keyboard on the table and a large screen on the wall. I was able to watch her enter my numbers in the blanks and answer her questions. (I was not quick enough to read everything on the screen.)

In 30 minutes she had it all done. No rebate coming to me, but nothing owed in taxes either! She could print out the pages for me to go home and copy them, or she could send it in online, but I would need to pay $132. I decided I could afford it. Get it done!

Just before she was all done she mentioned that the only reason she had time to help me was because her computer was down in her office down the hall, and so she had some time while that was being resolved.

I gasped, "What an answer to prayer!" Then I quickly expressed sympathy for her troubles. Yet I was totally convinced that God had allowed it to happen to her, for my benefit. A Miracle! I've been rejoicing over it many times since then.

Rest assured, God understands numbers and also that people are super busy at this time of year. Tomorrow, April 30th is the deadline - in case you need such a miracle too.
