What Makes You Cry?

© Ruth Marlene Friesen

Do you only cry when you hurt? Or, are you the kind of person who laughs until the tears roll involuntarily?

Maybe you are like me, and find they rise quickly when touched or moved, or aware of the presence of God. Or when empathy wells up for another.

I've noticed that I grade books and inspirational stories, by how much I have to wipe my tears. Do you do that too? So sometimes we pass along a piece we've read, and we say to a friend, "You'll like this, it's a real tear-jerker."

But now if you were going to deliberately write a story or article that is suppose to do this to others, how would you go about that? (Notice, I'm not an authority figure here; I'm working at sorting this out myself).

It seems that it takes that poignant moment when the reader identifies with the writer or the main character in a story - and all at once, they are hurting because that character is, or the people in the story are choked up because they stand with awe, in the presence of angels, or verily, even before God.

Let me challenge you to pay a little attention in the next few days or weeks to yourself, and pause to make a mental note whenever you find that wee involuntary tear rising. Ask yourself, "What did that?"

Go further, ask, "Am I alone in this, or would I be able to cause another one to feel the same spiritual touch?"

I'll tell you what... when you figure this out YOU will be able to write those tear-jerker stories and articles, and have all your friends forward them around the globe, passing them on and on.

No, better still, learn to submit them properly to all the inspirational markets out there, and you can earn a little compensation for your tears. Do you have any idea how many seek out these wee stories?

Our tears could become salable pearls!

But since you and I are friends, we'll share with each other, right?

OKAY! I'll watch for yours in the mail.
