Say, do you want to know how I've discovered hidden treasures in my house? You may have some too!
It's that DEEP-cleaning I only do once in so many years. (The number keeps changing. I can't recall when I did it last here at this place.)
This fall, when I was finishing my garden clean up for the winter, I promised myself, that while I had got in the habit of working outside for an hour each day except Sundays, I would just shift to do some Deep-cleaning of my house this fall and winter. One hour a day, Monday through Saturday, doesn't seem so bad, and I consider it my exercise plan.
I was going to allow a week for each room, but it has not quite worked out that way. The pantry took me just about two weeks. It really improved it and I cheer up now when I walk in there!
I started on the bathroom last week, hoping I'd make up time by getting it done in a couple of days. (Those top upper shelves took about an hour and a half last week.) Then more urgent business promises crowded me in. But yesterday I had my second day at the bathroom.
Guess what, when I was cleaning out the built-in cabinet beside the sink, where the inside reaches the width of the tub to the far wall, it happened as I reached in with my arm as far as it could go, I found boxes and stuff full of things I had long ago forgotten I even had!
Some of these things now seem like treasures! I've put them into a more accessible place - and some stuff I've dropped into the garbage. This challenge is getting to be more fun!
When I get to the kitchen I may get myself into repainting the cabinets, not so much fun.
When I get to the basement though (in January, I think,) I can expect to discover more treasures!
When you do your deep-cleaning you are likely to discover stacks of old CDs & DVDs. But if you throw them in the garbage bin, someone is likely to pull them out and look for names and addresses to add to scammers' lists. (They pay for such info!)
So far better that you turn them into colourful crafts. YouTube Etsy, and many other sites - especially those by crafters are chock full of ideas. Here's a few tips for preparing your discs first before you begin the crafting work.
* To soften them for cutting, lay them in a container of hot water for 5-10 minutes. The use a sharp scissor or garden shears to cut them into mosaic pieces, etc.
* Make clear/ see-through discs by scratching with the points of a scissor, ,then use packing tape to pull up the patches of silver, until it is all removed. Now you have a clear, see-through surface for your craft ideas.
* To make glittering rainbow coloured art, paint over the disc, then when it is dry, scratch your designs - maybe in a circular arrangement, with a sharp pointed object. The idea is to remove the paint and let the rainbow colours underneath show through in the spots you create.
For more ideas, do a search online and explore the ideas you find - you may soon have so many you have a hard time deciding!
