Do you notice evidence of the seasons changing too, these days? I do.
The heat during the sunshine hours have let up. The garden plants seem to brown off, or turn straw yellow, and some flowers appear quite dead already.
No evidence of watermelon this year, but I've counted at least 3 pumpkins growing and growing.
Instead of weeding sections over and over, I've stopped that and am focusing on cutting down the finished plants and putting their waste in the green compost bin.
Since I'm a seed-saver as my Gr'ma was, I've already cut the pods of seeds from the hollyhocks, and set them out in an old pizza box to dry out thoroughly. At the same time I cut down the long stocks, and put them into the green bin too.
This is also the time when the cherry tomatoes are ripe and it is fun to pop a handful into my mouth as I pass those plants. (Last night I put several hands full of cut into halves tomatoes into a pot of a good cabbage and vegetable soup.) These recipe variations are such fun!
There are moments when I look over the garden and I do wonder if I can possibly get it all cleaned up before the snows come. (Which might be only weeks away!) Yet this is a time of saving what I can and disposing of the waste matter, being grateful for the highlights.
Hey, I'm working on an end-of-Summer photo story of my garden, I hope to have it polished and finished in the next weekend or two. If you should like a copy do let me know. I'll mail or email it to you separately. I've done this for my PenPals for a number of years, and they look forward to it.
I'm hoping to have a booklet done by that time too. (See, a double Blessing!)
When your bananas ripen too fast, even turn black, do not despair, Put them into the freezer until you have time to whip up a banana loaf or 2 or 3. (The riper the sweeter!)
YouTube is full of recipes showing how to make banana bread,
even regular bread, with over-ripe bananas, and you can add
all kinds of extras into it.
nuts (such as pecans, walnuts, or just peanuts)
fruits, (raisins, cranberries, pineapple chunks, diced apple, etc.)
left-overs, (jams, berries, sweet sauces, etc.)
Put the mix into greased pans, and bake at 350 for 40-50 min. Prick the middle to make sure it is not raw inside. Bake until toothpick or knife comes out clean.
Sliced, this bread goes over as if it is marvelous dessert! It may disappear faster than brownies or candies!
