I'll say it up front: this is an experiment. Here's the background; last fall when I had my plant sale from the front porch, a young man whose job is to deliver meals from several restaurants when people phone in their order via DoorDash, or Skip the Dishes, etc., came to see my plants and started buying and begging for this one and that one ...for free.
When he discovered I was selling my brother Tom's models from a website, he was anxious to see them. He thought of the small models he'd had for toys as a child.
I really balked at unpacking the bins full of models I have in the pantry, spreading them out for him to look over and then afterward, packing them up carefully into their categories again. For one I had not researched all of them to see what I should charge, and I could see all my organized packing would be messed up.
So I told him to wait and I would prepare some of the small, cheapest models for a special off-line sale and put them on a flyer and keep them in a special box so he could see them, and decide about buying.
He assured me that he had friends, who'd be interested as well. Good, but all the more reason for me to be very organized about how I handled this special sale.
I worked on a flyer with photos of the cheapest models and had almost 2 pages full, when I had that computer hard drive problem in fall. I had a new one installed. But as I checked my files on the backup drives - that poster was GONE! (My heart sank!)
My fall was busy with clients' websites, and sadly my work on my own sites went on hold. Then I was sick over Christmas/New Years... so when I look back I had not had time or strength to work on the models since early December.
Hey, last week I finally got back to my routine for my sites, and when I went to look at the DMI site (my abbreviation), I hunted for where I'd left off. Hmm? Finally, I recalled that flyer sale I'd promised G. I couldn't find it so I started over from scratch. After three evenings, by end of Wednesday evening I had two legal sheets with six models on each, and all of them were priced at $4 or $5, and one at $3. (Good, a sale to clear out the cheapest models, since this was an experiment).
I found a few I had overlooked, so last night I added those and got 3 legal sheets full of models, short descriptions, and low prices for G and his friends who wanted deals but didn't think they know how to buy online.
By midnight last night I got those 3 sheets done and printed out, and now I have to decide when to call G and tell him I have a sale ready for him. I'll give him extra copies of the flyer for his friends.
Now, I'm wondering if they will keep arriving at the door to buy, and I won't get any other projects done!
Whether I ever do this again depends on how this wee experiment works out. Customers coming to my door at all hours of the day or days of the week may not be so convenient for me.
The man who usually drops by on Thursdays to see if I need snow shoveled, saw the start of the flyer and said he wanted copies to take to his morning coffee Klatch at the mall. (I told him to wait until this week.) These would be older men; so might have more cash to spend?
We'll see how it all comes out. Maybe it is all over by next week's RoseBouquet.!
