Last week I discovered a new way to meet my neighbours and make a cheerful contact with them.
With all the rainy days we've had in the last two weeks, it took me until Friday evening to get the weeding done in the front flowerbeds.
It was interesting, and rather cheering, to have someone ride by on her bike and call out, "I LOVE your daisies!"
The neighbour across the street walked over to introduce himself. He's French and from Quebec. He promised to send over his wife to get better acquainted too. (That has not happened yet.)
While we were talking and discussing my cheery daisies nodding their happy faces in the breeze, another neighbour, two doors west on my side of the street, walked over and joined us in our conversation. Turns out he is a new immigrant from Bangladesh. We exchanged names and even did hand-shakes.
When they left, I sat on my stool again pulling more weeds, thinking that this is a better way to make friends of my neighbours than to have a yard sale on Saturday mornings and early afternoons. I should remember to do this more often; pull weeds on a sunny evening.
Saturday afternoon I got a long cord in place and used my weed-eater as my mower to mow the tall grass, and trim the the flowerbeds edges with a very close cut.
I also sowed some calendula, and marigolds on the east side of the path to my door, plus some poppies by the tree stump (which seems to finally be rotting, for it grows a bunch of mushrooms every week).
I also got started on the west side of my path and worked around the floral circle. But then I'd been out there for 3 hours and was getting quite tired and hungry.
I went inside for a quick supper and a nap.
It was overcast all day yesterday, Canada Day, but it didn't rain in the evening, so I went out and finished my sowing of vivid flowers to come up when the daisies die off.[Back to Archives Index ] ~~ [Back to Main RoseBouquet Page]
