I've just come through almost a whole week of computer problems - yes, serious issues with my desktop, then my laptop too.
Some of the details are getting fuzzy now, but you do not want to read all that stuff. I'll try to summarize.
I realized last Wednesday that the external hard drive I was persuaded to put into my desktop just a couple of weeks ago, was only a serious trouble-maker. On Thursday I took my desktop back to that business, but the polite young man couldn't see a problem. He closed it up. But he was nice enough not to charge me for his time.
So I brought it home and tried to save all my files, and then to install a new system, but... my memory swirls now with the things I tried, and that did NOT work.
I researched on my laptop to see if I could find good advice. I tried several suggestions & ideas. No success!
I persisted all through Friday on both the desktop and the laptop. By late evening I realized that I might have bungled up both internal hard drives with my efforts. I could not get back in to re-do those steps. I promised myself that on Saturday morning I would take both of them to a computer repair place in the West end of the city.
I could not recall the exact name of the place, but I knew how to find it, and that it was staffed by three Muslim men.
My fabric shopping bag was heavy with both desktop and laptop, but I was able to park right in front of their door.Ready for Christmas Music?
The man I explained my problems to kept nodding and promised to call me when they were ready.
I went home and waited. No call. All I could do was housework and to PRAY!
I was able to go online on Tom's old computer, and searching for computer repair, I saw an image of their door. So that was their name! A note underneath said they would be open again at 12 noon on Sunday. (I would go there Sunday to check on their progress.)
We had a lunch at church at noon; I stayed for that. Then headed off to the computer store. The man with the longest beard told me he was at work on them and one of them should be ready in an hour if I wanted to wait. I went out for a quick shopping stop, then came back and waited. The man I was watching kept stopping to help other customers - mainly wanting the glass of their cellphone replaced.
At one point he announced to me that if I could wait a bit longer, both my devices would be ready.
I tried not to look exasperated and waited. At 4:30 pm he announced they were ready. My bill was $325 for 2 internal hard drives and the time setting them up.
I was hungry and utterly exhausted when I got home. The desktop & laptop needed to warm up.(-32 outside). So I raided my fridge, and took a nap.
The rest of the evening I explored what I had. Windows was installed on both, but it was hard getting past the first screen on the desktop. The laptop was fine! So I used that to download the latest versions of the systems I wanted to install.
Monday/yesterday, I got to work on the desktop, but after several tries I was stymied. I'd installed the new LEAP 15.6, only to catch the backup restoring my saved files complaining that there wasn't room for the size of the files.
A closer look, & I realized that I'd made a mistake in creating the partitions (the first step). The system was loading my backed up files into the 35 GB partition, which I'd figured would be for the root/ system and I'd created a 200 GB partition for my files. They were reversed!
What followed was a fight with Bios, and the install disc to get to re-do the partitioning correctly. I tried so many things, and came in circles.
Finally, I was at the verge of tears, when I stopped and cried out to the LORD to show me the right thing to do.
In moments I tried getting into Bios again and saw the word Legacy, suddenly I recalled it referred to the old way of doing things. In a few minutes I had deleted the mistaken partitions, made new ones, and presto! When I rebooted I was in my new LEAP 15.6 system and everything was "just right!"
Thank YOU, LORD! I'm Victor in this saga at last!
