My Hunt for Boots

I like someone else to break in new boots for me. New ones alway pinch me and cause friction sores. So I usually look for them in a second-hand store first.

The boots I've used for the last umpteen years (I don't recall when I got them) I found at a Salvation Army thrift store way back whenever that was. They were great; of leather, long-lasting, and roomy enough to wear two layers of socks in them, as my feet are easily cold.

In fact, I walked to and from the Western Tract Mission office for a number of winters with these boots and they were comfortable, and warm enough. They did not have much of a heel to speak of, which is fine, as high heels usually cause me to twist my ankle.

I knew last winter already that these boots had just about reached the end of their life-time. The soles were separating from the upper leather portions. So I was in the Sally Ann (Salvation Army thirft shop) and also in Value Village, but because of COVID we were not allowed to try on clothing or boots. So I considered and decided to take a pair of off-white suede boots, not as tall as my old ones, nor did they seem warm enough, but - I was desparate.

When I got home and tried them on, I found a lump in the sole of the right boot. So I promised myself I'd find a better pair before this winter.

But I was busy through the summer and had my mind on other things, so I forgot until this fall, and I kept reminding myself that I needed to find better boots. So many events and duties seemed to conspire to keep me from that shopping.

Last week I knew from the forecasts that winter was going to jump on us with some fury this week; I had better go find boots.

I went on Monday night to the Mission Thrift Store, but all I saw there were what I call "Barn boots" (for doing dirty outdoor chores), or the long, over the knee kind with crazy high heels. I went to check out Walmart and they did have some I could wear, brand new ones, but they cost $60!! I decided that I could check out a few more thrift stores first before I'd yield to that price.

Next I planned to go out on Friday afternoon, but different people dropping in and my block of time was gone. So I put it at the top of my Saturday agenda. I had to take some mail to the post office too.

I started at the Sally Ann, but the only two pair of boots I would have considered were about a half or full size too small for me. Then Value Village had much more selection, but even when I thought I'd found two pair that were good prospects, and I found a window ledge to sit on as I tried them on. - Nope. No way.

Then I tried the Liquidation Store, which imports a lot of knock-offs from Asian countries, and has had some shoes and slippers in the past. Again, the women's boots were very tall (over knee) boots with spike heels. The shelves were a mess and you could not tell what sizes they were.

I was too weary to continue, and went home. I decided that I could try the other, bigger Value Village at the south side of the city after church on Sunday, but if there was nothing there, I would have to settle for the Walmart boots.

Again, I found two pair that were possiblities, and I found a black bench at the end of the aisle where I could sit down and try them on. I choose the brown suede ones with a patchwork design on the sides, and an inside zipper. The toes are rather pointed but the foot area is long enough so that should not be a problem.

I thanked the LORD, as I came home! At long last my hunt for boots was over!

Should I be wrong, I can always go to Walmart when their boots go on sale. :)

Is this the way you do your shopping too? I bet I'm not the only one.
