Yesterday I did some research into the state of eBook publishing currently. Years ago when I first came online, I read that print books were going to be a thing of the dark ages - eBooks were going to be the main way information was shared.
Well, the pundits have concluded that print books are here to stay. But they are often bigger, heavier and more thorough. eBooks have definitely taken off, and are very popular in many ways, but they focus on the short, quick bursts of information that can be gulped down in a short time.
Piracy and audiobooks are currently big problems, and the fact that reading habits of people are changing so often. Video in ebooks is almost a certainty. The ebook will become less of a book and more of an app.
But do eBooks really sell?
From humble beginnings, ebooks now sell in the millions each year, with a global market worth $18.13 billion as of 2020. And there is plenty of room for a one-person ebook entrepreneur to get a piece of that market. (written May 26, 2021)
The good news is that self-publishers have control over all aspects of publishing, carrying out or outsourcing, as they see fit, the many tasks involved in producing a book. The bad news is, they have to acquire the skills and knowledge to complete the tasks, or find others to do them.
I find all this fascinating! I have a long list of ideas for eBooks I can produce. I'm working on one with a friend/client right now. (He just left and we agreed that we nearly have it polished up so I can go ahead and set it up for sale - soon!)
They don't all have to be called "eBooks". There are many other ways you can package some information as a digital download, which people will be glad to pay for, and then download and use.
Here are some ideas to PRIME your imagination;
Online Courses, PDFs and ebooks, TIP Jar (apps), Social media content calendars (google sheet), Printables (check out on Etsy), a membership site, stock photos & videos, planner programs, branding templates, quick start guide, 1:1 coaching packages, sell a service, Goodnotes Planners, sewing patterns, audio files & audio books.
