Last week I told you how the second-hand fridge I'd bought in November had turned out to be a stinker, and I thought it had no warranty, so I'd have to pay for another one.
No. It turns out that Mike's Appliances gives a whole year's warranty on their appliances. So last Tuesday afternoon, I went to look over what they had. The one closest to their front door looked like a good choice. I showed the man who was manning the store (a new employee) my invoice from the previous one and he pointed out that there was a whole year's warranty, so I would get this new choice for free. It would come with a new one-year warranty. It would be delivered the next day between 11am to 1pm.
I moved what I could into my old upright freezer in the pantry.
On Wednesday morning I was emptying the fridge while I was eating my breakfast on the run (on my feet). I had it all empty and wiped out by 10:30. Just then the Appliance shop called to say the guys were on the way with my newer fridge.
My cousin Gary had just arrived and was trying to show me on his cell phone that I should go for a brand new fridge instead. When I saw them, I said, I went through all that searching last fall, and see - the lowest prices are for very small mini-fridges at $800 and $1000/each. I paid $600 plus $30 for delivery in November, and now I'm getting a free replacement. So I assured him that I was satisfied with my deal.
Knowing that my doors are 30 inches wide, I had measured the one in their store. it was 29" or maybe another half inch. So it got into the house and right into the kitchen before we all realized that it was too tall for the space where the other one had just been taken out.
There is a cabinet built up high on the wall, not in any perfect shape; the bottom left corner of it was in the way of the fridge by about 2-3 inches. I explained that this house had been built in 1926. (So in 4 years it will be 100 years old). When Gary said he could cut a corner of that cabinet I told him to go ahead. The cabinet was not worth keeping whole in my mind. I only had baking pans and spare light bulbs in there anyway.
If we didn't do that, the fridge would have to stand in front of the only kitchen window, blocking all sunlight and the A/C that sits in the lower part.
In the corner - the space between where the fridge would stop and the back wall by the back door I had/have a shelf unit I cobbled together from some heavy black board that had been given me a long time ago. I used it for a pantry for my flours, tinned goods, juices, etc. Well, Gary put his hand on it and pulled at it. - Immediately it came apart and three shelves full of dry goods came tumbling to the floor! Another mess to clean up before I could even think about making myself a bit of lunch!
The delivery men left, and Gary left to get his carpentry tools. I got to work cleaning up this mess. Then I felt so exhausted I wasn't sure that I could make a decent lunch.
I sat down for a while and then decided to just make a tuna sandwich.
When Gary came back he screwed the shelf unit I'd built back together, more sturdy than ever! He took off the corner door on the upper cabinet, and sawed away about a 3 inch corner. He rolled the fridge into place, and then left.
I thought I was too wiped-out-exhausted, but I managed to wipe down the sawdust covered shelves and fridge, load the fridge with the foods on the counters, and I re-loaded the pantry shelves with the dry-goods.
I don't really remember doing any business work on Wednesday. I did start to watch a webinar in the evening, but I woke up with my forehead on my desk, and it was over.
However, the next morning when I was trying to find anything positive from Wednesday, I had to face the fact, that I do have a bigger, better fridge at no extra cost, and that it is cooling and freezing nicely in the upper part, and things look much tidier on the black shelves in the corner. So now I can see the blessings. Even of Gary being on hand at the right time. I'm now grateful!
