Yes, the garden is browning off. The plants are turning grey or brownish and have dead brittle leaves. Right now the day is sunny and the sky is blue, but the forecast is for frost by tomorrow or Thursday night, and possibly some mountain snows will reach us from the mountains on the other side of Calgary in the next province to the west.
So I've been harvesting dead flowers to save for seeds, and last night I started on vegetables. I brought in all the rhubarb stalks beside the rain barrel, the last of my cucumbers, one big orange pumpkin (not sure my weigh scale can handle that...)
I just tried it. Yes, it worked. That big thing comes in at a bit more than 14.5 lbs! It took my two hands to carry it in!
Now I'm seriously considering that tonight I'll bring in all 12 of my watermelons and my green tomatoes. I have some sheets I've used in the past to cover plants for over-night, but I don't much enjoy that. So some years I just as soon pick them before the frost, and get the vegetation dried up enough to bury it as compost in the garden.
I realize photos might be in order here, but I think I'll put that off until next week. You'll see why in a moment.
