How I Did it MY Way
Let me tell you how I learned this skill. As a writer myself I'm just itching to share this story.
By the way, the Newbie Club has an ebook out (actually a set of 4 volumes), called, First Website Builder Course. It shows you how Diane Reuby of England, built her site in just two weeks, using all the free helps online that the Newbie Club recommended to her. It came out after I'd learned my stuff, but lots of others have followed that plan and done well. You can get the whole set here for $29.95.
I forget how I stumbled my first step into web design, but when I went online, my ISP included Netscape with the package. I was totally green, but explored by cautiously clicking on things to see what happened. There was Composer included, and as I tried this and that, I found I could design a website with it! (Later I discovered that it didn't enjoy a very good reputation for design capacity on the net).
Next I discovered that I could go online and download free backgrounds. They were free as long as I didn't have a commercial site. Some were conditional upon putting a logo and link back to the place I got them from. In three months I had four pages up on my Sympatico site.
Reading the testimony of an Australian business man who'd been to the bottom and was coming back up, I learned about Make Your SITE Sell!. I read the free trial download and oh-oh! -- Got'a do my web pages over to incorporate the tips I picked up.
By now I was ready to start another one, and make it a business site Like the frugal, conscientious shopper I am, I researched until I found several sites and ezines recommending HyperMart as THE place for free business sites.
It took less time now to get the site up and running, but as it was a daily journal of my learning curve adventures, and little miraculous provisions, Journal of God's Provision was a daily web designing adventure. Whenever I learned something new, like providing affiliate banners, I changed almost every page, and uploaded again! After a while I had more than 60 pages and it got to be a chore re-doing them so often. But I was learning constantly!
About that time I was asked to help build a site for the non-profit Western Tract Mission. (More web pages to practice on). This is when I switched to using Star Office, and began to catch on to HTML and web coding in a new and exciting way.
In fact, I had a couple of other sites on free hosts at the same time... I tell you, it's hard to stop me when I'm on a roll.
I didn't want to appear to be a big shot, so I frankly shared my progress as I tried to become an online business woman on a shoestring that wasn't long enough to wrap around a finger. Only my STATS didn't show many visitors besides myself.
That is, until I learned that I didn't have to pay to become an ezine editor; I learned how from an eBook, and other ezines. So I started up my own ezine, called Journal-Digest, in an effort to encourage others who also wanted to do business online, but keep God as an integral part of it. That's when I started making friends! The ones who read my ezine began to visit my website!
Being faithful to my weekly commitment to write articles, taught me to be as prolific as I'd always thought I could be. Corresponding with subscribers brought many new lessons into my life. I also always announced the little miraculous ways God provided for me to carry on, and one day in December 2000, I was able to share the great news - I'd won a contest at eBooksn'Bytes.com , and now had a domain name and professionally hosted website worth $400!
I picked the domain name, Ruthes-SecretRoses.com to go with the title of the novel I longed to publish. I would use it to promote the book, and relate to all the new reader-friends it would bring me. I cannot tell you how many more web design challenges I tackled and learned as I started it up.
I tried out a small web editor in beta stage, and when I accidentally lost it, I switched to 1st Page 2000, a free program I'd heard about. That's the one I used for a long time. It served me well until ---
Well, until I got tired of my Windows98 crashing so often, and decided to install a Linux operating system. That created new learning curves, but among those was that windows-based programs don't work in that system. I had to find and try a new one. I switched to Quanta Plus, which I'm still using in 2007.
(I've heard or read of some other good ones, so I may dare to branch out again).
My novel domain site now has over 600 pages and continues to grow almost weekly. It's like a sprawling garden or park, where friends meet with me on different topics.
I'd only had it for six months, back there in 2000, when that host went under financially, and I had to quickly find another host, start paying, and transfer my site. Christian Web Host had a good Help Desk. But as I grew in web awareness, I discovered another host with rates as low as $10/year.
Besides still giving one evening a week to the WesternTractMission.org site, I began to build sites for friends and other missions and ministries. About June 2006 I decided that I'd be better off with a reseller package, where I would pay $24.95 per month for a large 5 GB of server space, and I could rent out space to others. It would mean a saving for me just for my own three sites, which I had by that time, and then I could cheerfully offer to give free hosting to certain missions or non-profits.
This is where I'm at by now, late 2007. This year I've taken on paying clients for web-design, and of course, each site has some new features which keep my learning curve rising up ward. But it does look like I have a marketable skill.
The biggest problem is that one human alone, can only work on so many sites at once.
Ah...! This is bringing us back to the present; helping YOU decide how to get your author's site up and winning friends for you.
All this above was just to show you that it IS possible to teach-yourself, and pretty well for free, but it will take longer - much longer! It depends on the time and the perseverance you invest.
Incidentally, I AM working on a an internship plan with my Virtual Assistant business, whereby I'll be teaching just four people at a time - how to build websites, and run their own business from their sites. But that's to start in January 2008.
