May Preparations and Sowing

Dad rotortilling by the fence
Dad rotortilling the garden soil. He always takes great pride in preparing the garden before I can sow anything. (Those white boxes by the fence are ones he built for setting around tomato seedlings).

Dad raking the rows just rotortilled
Dad stops to rake the soil smooth after every couple of furrows rotortilled. He doesn't like it lumpy.

Dad, on his brick path
Dad on his brick path. I have already started scratching my lines for sowing with Dad's homemade 3-tine rake for that purpose.

My short rows now sown
These are my first short rows sown and watered with the watering can. I do it much the way Mom and Grosz'mama always did. Dad lets me sow the right side of the path and he wants most of the left side for his potatoes.

A closer view of my seeded and watered rows.
A closer view of my seeded and watered rows. I wear an apron with deep pockets, and always draw a map so I know what went into which row.

Mom used to say that the best day for planting the garden was her Mom's birthday, which was May 6. This year that fell on a Saturday and a day that suited me perfectly, so I got most of the sowing done that day. In honour of Grosz'mama!
