A Book I can Highly Recommend
Tools for Muslim Evangelism
by Roland Muller
Published by Essence Publishing
I've recently re-read this book because of all the talk since 9/11 about contacts with and
evangelism of the Muslims all around us. I heard one missionary from Arab World Ministries say that
this has become THE textbook for all new missionaries joining them. It certainly makes a fine
guide!
Muller studied and researched the effective habits and styles of the successful evangelists, ones
who had lasting numerical results or fruit, and who had experience gathering these converts into
fellowship groups, or churches, to be taught the Bible in greater detail. Rather than letting new
evangelists learn all these tools by trial and error, Muller decided to condense these into a small
handbook, so that they could be apprenticed and trained.
Friendship evangelism as understood in North America, doesn't really work in winning Muslims to
faith in Christ. They will respect and listen to someone who deports him or herself as a teacher
with wisdom to share. It is after they have committed themselves to Christ, that they need friends
and family to replace the close community they are used to in their Muslim family and tribe.
Very often they are ostracized and persecuted, and unless they escape, they are often murdered for
their stand as a Christian. Life as a new Christian is hard and very lonely for them. Therefore,
they desperately need Christians to adopt and take them into their intimate circles at that
point.
This book has extensive information on the art of teaching. Muller suggests inviting one or two
muslims to study through six lessons on the Bible and Christianity. There is helpful advice on
appropriate clothing, seating arrangements, and how to show respect for the Bible as a Holy Book.
Also, whether or not to use notes or serve refreshments. Memory work, I see, is highly
recommended.
I find it fascinating that the peoples of the Middle East (including Israelis) are very much picture
and parable-story orientated, and honour and shame play a huge role in their lives. In North America
we are used to telling people that God will take away all their guilt when they trust Christ, or
that Jesus took their sentence. Muslims do not worry about guilt nearly as much as the shame.
To shame or embarrass their family or tribe utterly mortifies them. It is far more helpful to point
out to them that Jesus bore their shame. If they can grasp that truth, the gospel of the cross
becomes more appealing.
Muller includes examples of parables and proverbs to have ready, though he recommends gathering
your own from their culture, and using them as springboards to turn a conversation to the truths and
principles in God's Word.
Though of course, Muller is quick to point out several theological hangups, such as the Son of God
humiliating Himself to the cross, which we need to be prepared to answer.
He goes on to offer numerous tips for contexulizing the gospel to their culture, and discipling
the new believers, and bringing them into fellowship with others.
This slim volume includes still more! The six lesson Discovery series used by the successful Arab
evangelist, Abdullah Hawatmeh, are outlined (with the help of Dan Brown), as an example that other
evangelists may emulate. Plus, there are several appendices of resources, both books and
audio-visuals that may be used to prepare for evangelizing Muslims.
As the author points out in his preface, this book was written with evangelism in mind in the Middle
Eastern Muslim countries, but it can easily be adapted to personal use in any other country. I agree
and think more of us should be using this helpful toolbox.
Other books by this author include;
The Man from Gedara,
Honor and Shame, Unlocking the Door,
and Missinoary Leadership by Motivation and
Communication.
