Meet Snowflake in Pictures
My friends seem to either love cats or hate them. I thought I could be totally indifferent to pets. I guess because Dad did not care for house pets, so I had resigned long ago to just caring for plants. Now that I've had my cat, Snowflake, for about a month, I've come to see how much I am like a cat myself. :)
Or is it the other way around; how much Snowflake is like me?
That's within boundaries, naturally. I am innately curious too, but I don't pull things apart, and ...I don't whine for attention, do I?
So much for philosophizing. Let the pictures tell their story first. You need to meet Snowflake before we start building empires of thought on cat behaviour.
Hasn't she got a pretty face?
At only 4 months she's an armful for me. I've taken to calling her by the Low German nickname, Bushji. It doesn't translate exactly, but from the way my Mom used the word, it's a term of endearment for a cute little girl who is also a bit of a handful of charm and chatter, etc.
The first afternoon, Snowflake nosed around, whimpering softly to herself, like she was not sure she was going to like this place. But then she found a place to curl up on my sewing table by the bedroom window, had a good nap, and woke up ready to explore.
She was a little shy of me the first few days, and hid so well the second day that I had to pray earnestly to be able to find her! However, she gradually began to show a hunger for affection and a love for play. She can entertain herself quite well.
(In fact you should hear her careening around the house like greased lightening while I write this!)
When I go into the kitchen she comes and throws heself on the floor, hoping for some tickles and scratches. She loves to be physically handled.
Snowflake now uses the old cushion of my Gr'ma Kroeker's that I laid under my desk for her. She likes to be near me, and if I walk around the house, she often follows me around as if she were a heel on my slipper.
My desk is modular with a U-shaped arrangement. The piece on my right has a floor, and she likes to sit there some times so she can gaze at my face.
Here's some shots of Snowflake playing with toys by herself. I bought a brown stuffed bunny for her in a grab bag deal, and of course the balls I made for her of aluminum foil. They disappear on her, so I gather them up again on Saturday when I sweep and wash the floors.

Oh yes, there's Duckie, someone else gave me for her. That was her very first toy.
Just a couple of weeks ago, my friend Shirley popped in to see Snowflake and brought her a hemp mouse filled with catnip. She delights to gnaw on it as if determined to open it, and sometimes she plays with it by the stool near the door.
Got it!
Last week she had fun with a little strip of glitter wrapping paper that I dropped to the floor.
Oops, it doesn't stay put in her paws.

Cats do go off and do their own thing, but Snowflake has gradually got to where she has no shame about coming to beg for lap time. She goes into ecstacy and writhes and purrs with pleasure when I tickle-massage her all over. Sorry, hard to handle a camera while doing that).
|
However, she's been shedding a lot of hair so I'm trying to hold back in case I'm causing that problem. Alternatively, she likes to sit in my lap by the computer and pretend to sleep in bliss. That puts a strain on my outstretched arms to use thekeyboard so after a short session I put her on the floor again. She's content to lie nearby and purr herself to sleep.
